The DownsSteam tourist & railway museum is the hidden gem of Toowoomba. Located just outside of Toowoomba at Drayton (only 14 minutes from the city centre) It features the rollingstock they maintain and other memorabilia not only from Queensland Rail but from other railways. The museum is not just for train-buffs as well. I am a self-confessed train nut so I dragged my wife and son there. You could see they were none too impressed to be at just another rail yard. How wrong they were. We took the tour and you could see how happy they were that we went.
The tour is great with our guide being both friendly and knowledgeable. The absolute highlight though is the "dreamtime" carriage. Make sure you get the guided tour to find out the remarkable story behind the transformation from a standard suburban carriage into a stunning work of art.
I would fully recommend a morning spent at the DownsSteam museum as a must on your next trip up the range to Toowoomba.
