Yet skin cancer is an almost totally preventable form of cancer; 95 per cent of skin cancers are treatable if they are detected early. Regular checks of your skin should detect any suspicious moles or spots as soon as they develop. This could potentially lead to earlier diagnosis...
Skin cancer already cost the health system around $300 million annually over a decade ago, the highest cost of all cancers. More recently it has been calculated that the total cost of non-melanoma skin cancers alone was $512.3 million in 2010 (diagnosis, treatment and pathology).
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Despite being almost entirely preventable, skin cancer continues to affect at least two in every three Australians in their lifetime. The amount of exposure required to cause skin cancer varies greatly from one person to another.
