SS Speke Shipwreck, Kitty Miller Bay - Humble Trail
SS Speke Shipwreck, Kitty Miller Bay The SS Speke ran aground in 1906 not far from Phillip Island's Kitty Miller Bay; a rocky cove that has more recently become a hotspot for fishing, surfing and snorkelling. The Bow or "nose" of the Speke has come to rest on its side, concealed behind cliffs to the East of the Bay.

Shipwreck SS Speke I did my homework, but Stephen, having been doing this longer, was better at it. While I focused on a couple of things to photograph (and really focused on the technical stuff), Stephen was able to research a broader set of things. One of the things we photographed was the remains of SS Speke that shipwrecked in Phillip Island.

A three masted steel ship of 2, 876 tons and 93 metres, having been built in Wales, 1891, the Speke drifted broadside on to a reef to the east of Kitty Miller Bay on 22 February 1906 while en route from Peru via Sydney to Geelong in ballast to pick up wheat. Parking at Kitty Miller beach, go down the stairs and turn left. Walk along the beach and rocks for 100 metre and you will see a steep track on your left. Head up this track then follow it around for around 600 metres and you will find the SS Speke Shipwreck. There is a very steep slippery path down to the shipwreck.
