Griffiths Street Port Fairy Phone: (03) 5568 2632 Visit Website. The collection includes a restored sea-going lifeboat, which was built at the Williamstown marine yard in 1857. A replica seaworthy whaleboat (built 1988, to Charles Beetle plan), is also managed by the Station and regularly sailed.
Collection relates to Port Fairy (Belfast) Lifeboat Station - a fine collection of 19th Century and early 20th Century maritime rescue equipment, including a restored and seaworthy Vessel delivered to Port Fairy 27/09/1857 and crewed by local volunteers (fishermen, government boatmen etc) until WWII.
Returning to Portland, the steamer, towing the Portland lifeboat and crew, returned and located the 22 starved and parched survivors. On Saturday, the lifeboat with an attendant boat, gathered the survivors from a certain death, to AMMC Member Institution. Port Fairy Historic Lifeboat Station.
The Port Fairy lifeboat was built in Williamstown in 1857 and is the oldest surviving self-righting, self-draining lifeboat in the world. Co-incidentally, its sister boat, Portland, also survives (Portland Maritime Discovery Centre). The Port Fairy vessel is housed in its original lifeboat house, and is regularly taken to sea by a volunteer crew.
