At Hardwick Hall, outside Sedgefield in County Durham, John Burdon created one of the finest parkland landscapes in the North East of England. The park was much visited and acclaimed in the later 18th century. Seven major garden buildings and smaller delights were set out on or near a circuit walk around a new lake and serpentine 'river'.

We're actually in the middle of creating a new nature reserve just north of Hardwick Park; Bishop's Fen will be created on approximately 25 hectares of land which can be accessed through the park.
About. Hardwick Park is a country park with a difference. Now a Visit England accredited attraction, it has survived since the 1750s when its then owner, John Burdon, created a sprawling ornamental park. Today, the remains of some of the original buildings he created can be seen throughout the park, which suggest the area has a richer story to tell.
Hardwick Park consists of a landscape garden and parkland occupying about 80 hectares. James Paine designed the garden which remains unaltered, and is in the process of restoration. The design incorporates temples, follies and grottoes set around a lake of about 7 hectares. The site is now run as a Country Park by Durham County Council.
