Popular place and to view a ship onboard with grandchildren or your own
I have driven past on so many occasions, but never expected it to be so fantastic. The tour of the ship was unbelievable, my 9yo absolutely loved it. Ontop of this, I heartily recommend visiting and spending a few hours to see the history of a ship in the museum, well worth its weight in gold. There is also fun activities to keep children amused for quite some time, a theatre to see the grounding of the HMAS WHYALLA, (very informative and entertaining) , as well as model railways and many other artifacts. If you are visiting Whyalla, definitely put it in your plans, take the time to visit, you will not be disappointed.
Def worth the time to stop in and do the tour of the boat BEFORE going into the museum. Friendly helpful staff. Great couple of hours for a 43 year old man and a 13 yrar old boy
This was a rare and rewarding experience. Saw some history, learned some facts and enjoyed a day out. We are actually planning a revisit. My kids loved the model rail way which is actually a representation of local steel mill and mines etc.
I highly rate this and recommend it.
The ship is an amazing addition for Whyalla tourism. I'm often outside eating my lunch and see A LOT of people stop to get a photo. The actual museum is filled with great history of Whyalla. Staff are friendly and helpful. Worth a visit!

The Whyalla Maritime Museum is home of the former HMAS Whyalla - first ship built at the Whyalla Shipyard in 1941. It stands high and dry - 2km inland from its birthplace and 2 metres off the ground. Every year thousands of visitors enjoy actually walking under the ship before boarding it with a tour...
Next to the visitor centre, the Whyalla Maritime Museum includes the HMAS Whyalla, allegedly the largest landlocked ship in Australia (who keeps track of these things?). In 1941, the Whyalla was the first ship built at the Whyalla Shipyard, which closed 1978 and constructing 66 ships. 08-8645 8900.
