I just managed to score a lens barrel replacement part on eBay (item number 330676297045) from "procamerarepair"; there are still plenty of these available from that source. It appears to be a non-Canon replica (note the " For Canon" label on the part) of Canon lens barrel part ID YG9-0312-000.
The 1.4 III has slightly better optics than the 1.4x II so image quality should be slightly better with any lens you use it with. As for AF performance, when the 1.4x III was released, only Canon's new Super-Telephotos lenses were designed to benefit form the new microcomputer updates in the new Series III Extenders (Teleconverters).
