1. Align the seam edges or fabric layers to be basted, and secure them with pins. 2. Stitch in place a few times at the beginning of the application to secure the beginning of the basting. 3. Taking short, even strokes, stitch from right to left, next to the seamline, pulling the thread through every few stitches.
Using a sharp, long needle makes hand basting quilts and garments quick (er!) work. For thread tracing seams, making tailor's tacks and other hand basting, these are my favorite needles. They have a large eye which makes them easy enough to thread, even when using basting cotton. At about 2.25" in length, with a very sharp tip, they stitch ...
Don't assume that hand basting is necessarily the slowest way to get a finished product. Pin basting, stitching on the machine, then taking those stitches out - if you repeat that sequence three or four times, you could easily spend a half hour or more on a small seam. When it's time to start quilting, I just have to clip the hand basting and remove where I plan to quilt. And….I can start anywhere I want. Nice! I have decided to take the leap and hand quilt this project, a first for me. I've been cruising my quilting books for ideas while I await my lap hoop. I ordered a Grace 14-inch Poly Swivel hoop ...

Although I'm an ox as far as hand stitching is concerned, this was easy (since it's not a finish stitch), held the quilt together (I used two layers of flannel .
Hand basting your quilt I've had a few e-mails asking me how/why I had my quilt rolled up on a piece of board. So I decided to share Susan Schamber's videos on how to hand baste your quilt, easily and without putting any strain on your body. It was the 1st time I've tried this method, ...
