There are seven currently recognized families of bees: Apidae, Megachilidae, Halictidae, Andrenidae, Colletidae, Melittidae, and Stenotritidae. The largest one, Apidae, includes bumble bees and our well-known non-native honey bees. The social, honey-producing stingless bees of South America are included here, as well as thousands of solitary species which nest in underground burrows or tunnels ...
Honey bees ( Apis mellifera) are but one species among thousands of different bees within the superfamily Apoidea. Honey bees are unique in their societal life cycle and storage of large food reserves; most bees are solitary, nest individually, and do not store surplus food. Honey bees are not native to America and were imported from Europe ...
SPECIES IN. NORTH AMERICA. Megachilidae. Osmia. 500. 140. BEESPONSIBLE TIP. Mason bees need mud or clay for nesting material, as well as early-blooming sources of food nearby. Good options include flowering fruit trees (ornamental or edible), redbuds, berry shrubs, pussy willow and single-petal rose varieties.
About Our Native Bees. Most native bees (90%) are solitary and do not nest in colonies. 70% of native bees nest in the ground and 30% nest in cavities such as hollow stems. All bees undergo complete metamorphosis - egg, larvae, pupae, adult. Only female bees collect pollen and construct nests for their young. Some female bees collect dry ...
FALL: REMOVE, PROTECT, STORE WILD BEES. By late fall, adult bees and beneficial, solitary wasps have finished nesting and left their offspring to hibernate over the winter. You'll want to remove, protect, and store all wild, native bee and wasp nesting materials to keep the hibernating larvae safe from parasites, ants, birds, and other predators.
Bee nesting block. A lack of deadwood can be addressed by installing nest blocks, houses for bees essentially. Nest blocks should be constructed from untreated lumber (2×4, 4×4, to 4×8) and eight or more inches in height. Holes of varying diameters, from 1/4"to 3/8", should be drilled into the blocks spaced 3/4" apart.
Description: Leafcutter bees are often more squat-looking than other bee species. They carry their pollen under their abdomens, which are usually black, with pale bands of hair. Common species in the Pacific Northwest: western leafcutter bee, Megachile perihirta; silver-tailed petal-cutter beer, Megachile montivaga.
Is there evidence for competition between honey bees and native wild bees (or honey bees with themselves)? Yes. As seen in Figure 2, Muller's index is close to 1 (strong predicted competition) for all bee groups early in the season, especially in March. This means honey bees are likely competing with wild bees, and it also means that ….
Native bees range in size from 2 millimeters for some Fairy Bees (Perdita species) to several centimeters (some Bumblebee queens). Some of our native bee species are social bees that live together in colonies, but the vast majority are solitary bees that live on their own. Approximately 75% of our 4,000 bee species are generalist foragers.
