What a wonderful place! Wide life, clear water and a lot of friendly families having a great time. 1st time camping and loved it. Take an extra blanket for the night, even on hot days as the night can get chilly.
This place is a bit of a hassle to get to with all your gear for camping, but worth the effort. Camp-site has fairly basic, but working facilities. Real mixture of people - young backpackers to families to older couples. 10pm curfew is not really strictly adhered to, but if you chose your location carefully (ie not next to big groups of 20 somethings) it's not really a big problem as the place is big enough to cater for all. Lots of local wildlife to be found and the lagoon is a great swimming spot. Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest - Sunday nights are very quiet.
Great place for camping and great facilities though no hot showers. They have vending machines (chips and ice cream) also a coffee machine and charging stations that were set up locker-style. A lot of big groups of families and friends and huge tent setups so if you're looking to really get away for some peace and quiet, prob not the best campground. Great place to take kids though! We got to see wild wallabies, ducks, bush turkeys and also a goanna. My friend saw a python. Also went snorkelling but didn't see anything.
It's a great hidden gem where kids can have lots of fun as there is a lagoon where they can play safely. Also, the BBQ facilities are great with plenty of covered tables available. It's a great spot to have a lunch with the family. Getting there requires a boat or a ferry. I believe making it hard to get to ensure that it does not get very crowded. Love it! Please note that dogs are not allowed as it's part of a national park.
My partner and I just returned from a beautiful three days at the Basin Campground over New Years Eve. This was their busiest time of year however we still felt we could escape from the people and enjoy some privacy in nature. We were able to choose where we set up our tent as it was all unmarked.
We spotted lots of wallabies, goannas and ducks and has a super time swimming in the very safe lagoon.
Everyone was fairly compliant with the noise curfew of 10pm although we brought ear plugs which we used every night as the tents were packed in fairly tightly. It is a very family friendly campground is mostly made up of kids rather than backpackers.
Ice and bait are sold twice a day and access to barbecues (which are cleaned daily) and water was very easy.
The amenities block was large and cleaned daily and the lights in the block stay on during the night which is helpful for nighttime toilet trips!
It is a very professionally run campground with strong ranger presence which came in very handy when our air mattress broke and the rangers were only too helpful in providing us with a spare mattress late at night.
