In the 1830s, Simmental cattle in Switzerland were imported to Germany and Austria. Simmental cattle were known for their size and quality of milk production, and the goal was to use them to improve dual-purpose cattle breeds in these other countries by breeding them with local stock. The Fleckvieh cattle became an independent breed in 1920.
