The history of the Paula Red Apple tree is rather simple. A grower by the name of Louis Arends discovered it in the Fruit Ridge, which is northwest of Grand Rapid, in 1960. Specifically, Arend's orchard was in Spart Township in Kent County, Michigan. He found the tree close to the McIntosh section of his orchard.
Large, round, somewhat flattened fruit is shiny red-red with a pleasantly tart, crisp, firm flesh, unlike many early-ripening varieties. Won't brown when cut. Stores up to 3 months — far longer than other early comers — and keeps its desirable crisp quality. Ripens in early August. Pollinator required: Choose another apple variety.
