This newly constructed viewing platform and access trail showcase the Australian National Botanic Gardens' "Bushland Precinct", and provide magnificent views down over Lake Burley Griffin. The track is well constructed, with occasional information signs and seats to rest on. The viewing platform is a good place to watch the dawn sky reflected in Lake Burley Griffin, or the annual Skyfire and other fireworks displays over the lake. An informal track leads on from the viewing platform, sidling around the slopes of Black Mountain and eventually joining a fire trail. If you turn right (uphill) the firetrail climbs to the ridge, where you can cross the summit road, and then continue through the ridge-top picnic area
-- either on to Telstra Tower at the summit, or along the side of the mountain to eventually intersect the Black Mountain summit track. The summit track leads down another ridge and enters through a "back gate" into the top end of the Botanic Gardens. It is then an easy stroll through the gardens, have coffee at the cafe, then head back to the parking lot to complete a very interesting circle walk.
After noticing the viewing platform from Parkes Way, I finally investigated. It at the end of a great trail from the Australian National Botanical Gardens/ the start of Black Mountain Drive. A pretty easy walk, with a few steps on a well formed path, a couple of bridges crossing wet gullies and some ANBG plant and ecosystem info signs along the way. The view from the platform is great, across the lake and accompanied by a couple of heritage info boards. Return the same way, or push on around the base of Black Mountain.
